Early Life

Born on April 18, 1952, in Kopergaon, Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra, my early life was influenced by my family’s values of selfless service, hard work and education. My father, Late Shri Suryabhan Athare Patil, was a respected lawyer and social worker, while my mother, Late Smt. Heerabai Suryabhan Athare Patil, fostered a compassionate and learning-focused environment. Inspired by my family’s dedication to social causes, I developed a genuine desire to contribute to the community.

I attended Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School in Pune, followed by medical studies at Grant Medical College & J.J. Group of Hospitals in Mumbai, where I earned my M.B.B.S. and M.S. in General & Laparoscopic Surgery. This education reinforced my commitment to healthcare and service.

In 1978, inspired by my uncle, Late Shri Chandrabhan Athare Patil (freedom fighter, educationist, lawyer and Member of Parliament), I entered politics. Joining the Indian National Congress Party and later the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), my political journey has been driven by a desire to address community issues with integrity and honesty. From my early life to my medical career and political involvement, my journey has been marked by a commitment to genuine selfless service and positive impact.

My Education Journey

I did my schooling as a hosteler at Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School, Shivajinagar, Pune from 1961 to 1969. This institution instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, responsibility and National Pride. The military school environment was rigorous and demanding, but it also provided me with a solid academic foundation and love for sports. The values of perseverance, integrity, and dedication that I learned there have stayed with me throughout my life. It was here that I first began to appreciate the importance of structure and discipline, qualities that would serve me well in my future endeavors.

Later, I attended Fergusson College in Pune for my pre-medical education from 1969 to 1971.

I then completed a medical degree at Grant Medical College & J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, graduating in 1976 with an M.B.B.S. degree. This period was crucial in shaping my career as a healthcare professional. The comprehensive medical training I received provided me with a deep understanding of the human body and the various ailments that affect it. More importantly, it solidified my commitment to healthcare and my desire to use my skills to serve those in need. The experience was intense and demanding, but it was also incredibly rewarding, as it marked the beginning of my journey in medicine.
From 1977 to 1980, I furthered my medical education by earning a Master of Surgery (M.S.) in General Surgery from Grant Medical College & J.J. Group of Hospitals. Specializing in surgery allowed me to develop advanced skills and knowledge in a critical area of medicine. The rigorous training and hands-on experience in general surgery equipped me to handle complex surgical cases with confidence and precision. This specialization also reinforced my belief in the importance of continuous learning and staying updated with the latest medical advancements to provide the best possible care to my patients.
In 1998, I was honored to receive the Fellowship of the Association of Surgeons of India (F.A.I.S.). This recognition was a significant milestone in my career, as it acknowledged my expertise and contributions to the field of surgery. Being part of this prestigious association since 1981, it connected me with a network of highly skilled and dedicated surgeons across India. It provided opportunities for my professional development, collaboration and staying updated about the latest research and techniques in surgery. The fellowship underscored my commitment to excellence in surgical practice and to the ongoing improvement of healthcare standards.
In 1990, I got trained in Laproscopic surgery at the J.J. Group of Hospitals. This training enhanced my skills in minimally invasive surgical techniques, allowing me to offer my patients less invasive treatment options with quicker recovery times. This not only advanced my surgical capabilities but also emphasized the importance of adopting new technologies and methodologies in medical practice to continually improve patient outcomes.

In 2011, In recognisation of my achievement in laproscopic surgery, I was honored with the Fellowship of the Indian Association of Gastro-Endoscopic Surgeons (FIAGES). This fellowship recognized my expertise in gastro-endoscopic surgery, a specialized and rapidly evolving field.
